In the Ulriksdal Palace Park you will find the rediscovered treasure from 1753 that is Confidencen, Sweden’s oldest rococo theatre. On its stage King Gustavus III and Carl Michael Bellman performed in the late 1700s, as have most of the greatest Swedish singers and dancers of today, making it both an integral part of Swedish cultural history and a highly vivid theatre.

It is situated in a separate building in the park and although it was not part of the palace tour, the theatre was of course closely associated with the palace and thus worth knowing a little about. The building itself had originally been constructed as riding stables in the 1670’s. On Queen Lovisa Ulrika’s initiative it was converted into a theatre. Attention s'il vous plaît! Named "Confidencen" after an ingenious contraption in the royal apartment, right next to the auditorium: a so-called "table à confidence" which was lowered into the basement through a hatch in the floor, set by the servants and then Confidencen, the theatre built in 1752 at Ulriksdal, is also part of a palace complex in a beautiful lakeside setting and, again like Drottningholm, a long period of neglect preceded its revival.

The Confidencen is today the oldest Rococo theatre in Sweden. Ulriksdal Palace had in the palace's northern wing originally a chapel, built in 1662 by architect Jean de la Vallée. The chapel was torn down during Gustav III's renovation of the palace in 1774.

The house was built as a riding school in 1670. It was rebuilt by Carl Fredric Adelcrantz in 1753 as a court theatre for King Adolf Fredric and Queen Lovisa Ulrica.
